Description
NAD⁺ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a ubiquitous pyridine dinucleotide coenzyme found in all living cells, where it functions as a central redox carrier and metabolic regulator. Structurally, it consists of two nucleotides joined by a phosphate–phosphate linkage: one containing an adenine base and the other nicotinamide.
NAD⁺ exists in oxidized (NAD⁺) and reduced (NADH) forms. In its oxidized state, NAD⁺ accepts electrons to form NADH, which subsequently donates electrons to the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
